The Woman Destroyed /
She Came to Stay
Inspired by two of Simone de Beauvoir’s works, “The Woman Destroyed / She Came to Stay” derives meaning and emotion from those experiences in both process and form.
The Woman Destroyed
Originally a painting of a moment in time, the canvas was slashed to represent a betrayal. Slow embroidery repaired the cuts in the canvas mimicking the time needed to repair the fractures created.
The canvas was then painted over with multiple layers of gesso, indicating a fresh start, but the back of the canvas remained untouched, exposing the skeleton of the embroidery and how delicate the repairs could be.
She Came to Stay
The colors on the canvas are oil pastels. Each mark indicates a moment where a name of the other woman came into mind, repeated over and over to immortalize the constant but waning weight of the infidelity until the piece came to an end.
